WHAT IS SCAFFOLDING?
A scaffold is a temporary structure erected to support
access or working platforms. Scaffolds are commonly used in construction work so workers have a safe, stable work
platform when work cannot be done at
ground level or on a finished floor.
Types of scaffoldings:
1. Frame scaffolding
2. Tube and Clamp
3. Modular system scaffolding
4. Rolling/mobile scaffolds
5. Cantilever scaffolding
6. Suspended scaffolding
1. Scaffolds shall be furnished and erected for persons
engaged in work that cannot be done safely from the ground or from solid
construction.
2. The footing or anchorage for scaffolds shall be sound,
rigid and capable of carrying the maximum intended load without settling or
displacement. Unstable objects such as barrels, boxes, loose brick, and concrete
blocks shall not be used to support scaffolds or planks.
3. Scaffolds and their components shall be capable of
supporting without failure at least four times the maximum intended load.
4. Any scaffold damaged or weakened from any cause shall be
immediately repaired and shall not be used until repairs have been completed.
5. Scaffolds shall not be loaded in excess of the working
load for which they are intended.
6. All planking or platforms shall be overlapped (minimum
12 inches) or secured from movement
7. An access ladder or equivalent safe access shall be provided.
8. Scaffold planks shall extend over their end supports not
less than 6 inches nor more than 18 inches.
9. Employees shall not work on scaffolds during storms or
high winds.
10. Tools, materials, and debris shall not be allowed to
accumulate in quantities to cause hazards.
11. Wire or fibre rope used for scaffold suspension shall be
capable of supporting at least six times the intended load.
12. While the mobile scaffold is in use the castor wheel should
be suitably blocked.
13. 10 - foot fall protection for scaffolding.
14. Metal scaffolds cannot be erected, or used near energized
power lines/transmission lines.
15. Scaffolding is to be installed with all components.
16. Scaffolding must always be secure when the height of the
scaffold exceeds four (4) times the minimum base width.
17. Scaffolding is to be installed by a competent person.
18. Pre-inspection of scaffolding to be done followed by an inspection checklist and tag system to be followed.
19. Scaffolding and ladder shall conform to relevant IS
specifications (IS 3696-1966). TIMBER/ BAMBOO
SCAFFOLDING SHALL NOT BE USED.
20. Employees working on scaffolds are exposed to these hazards:
a. Falls from elevation – caused by slipping, unsafe access, and the lack of fall protection
b. Struck by falling tools/debris
c. Electrocution – from overhead power lines
d. Scaffold collapse - caused by instability or overloading
e. Bad planking gives way
