HOW DO YOU INSTALL ELECTRICAL CONDUIT IN BRICKS / BLOCK MASONRY?

HOW DO YOU INSTALL ELECTRICAL CONDUIT IN BRICKS / BLOCK MASONRY?

The following points are the sequence of operations for the safe installation of PVC / GI pipes and components in bricks/block masonry according to standard procedure and code.

1. Make sure the bricks/block masonry work is completed and prepared for electrical work.

2. Check if the FFL (Finished Ground Levels) reference is marked.

ELECTRICAL CONDUIT IN BRICKS / BLOCK MASONRY

Electrical Chases in Brick Wall Sequence of Operations With Guidance

Marking of Switch Box and Light Points

1. Switch, sockets, light and foot lamp location and conduit route marked on the wall with proper height based on approved shop drawing.

2. Do not use any conduit smaller than 20 mm in diameter or larger than 32 mm in diameter.

3. Specify the location of the switch box, DP, and junction box from the FFL to the light point on the wall.

Wall Chasing:

1. After marking the route and switch box location, wall chasing should be done using a wall cutting machine.

2. Using Hammer and chisel the chased portion chipped in the depth of 2” to 3” mm or as per standard specifications.

3. Wall chases should be inspected for accommodation space for outlet boxes, switch/point control boxes, data boxes to be fixed along with conduits.

4. Power conduits should not be run near any data line

5. Elbows and bends should not be used. If there is a change in the direction of the pipe, use a spring to bend the pipe.

Note: Chasing work shall be carried out after completion of curing of brickwork (at least 7 days gap from brickwork)

Installation of conduit pipes

1. If the length of the pipe flow is more than 10 m, a junction box shall be provided for periodic inspection and replacement of wires if necessary. These should be flush wall mounted.

2. Conduit pipe is placed in the chases using concrete nails. Nail shall be maintained at 2 feet at intervals.

3. Conduit pipes should be concealed with chicken mesh before plastering

Installation of Switch Board / Distribution box

Note: DB Wall blockwork/brickwork thickness should be 9” minimum

1. DB and switch box should be installed in locating the plaster level points (button mark given for plastering). (note: 3 mm below the plastered surface)

2. The mounted height of the Switch Board is generally

) The height of the switchboard must be 1.3m to 1.75m from floor level

) The height of the distribution board must be 1.5m to 1.75m from floor level

) The bottom of the ceiling fan should have a minimum clearance of 2.75m

) All lamps should be fitted with a minimum clearance of 2.75m above floor level

) 300 mm near the bed

General according to the approved drawings.

3. Confirm the size of the box and cut the box slightly larger with sufficient depth at the marked location of the block/brick wall accordingly.

4. Adjust the GI metal box to the appropriate size and level with the help of the Spirit level.

5. The switch box and DP were installed using cement mortar around the box. Make sure it is fixed flush with plaster level.

6. The switch box/junction box bottom level should mark level as per consultant approved height as per local applicable wiring regulation requirements.

7. The spacing between the two switchboards should be the same for all installations (note: minimum 3” space between box).

8. Junction box and switch box should be covered and secured with brown tape filled with paper and a gunny bag.

How is Wall Chasing Done?

During floor or wall treatment, hand-held cutting tools provided with cutter machine are used to cut conduit pipe route locations of specific depth and width in brickwork. Then using a small breaker or hammer drill the centre part of the concrete blocks/bricks is removed. This technique is quick and dust-free.

How to Fill Electrical wall Chase?

Once the conduit is installed. Using mesh sealed the conduit to avoid cracks. Then close the chase using filler

As a filler is cement mix

Cement mix - 3:1 – 3 parts of soft sand: 1 part of cement.
