What Is Flow Meter?
Flow Meters
The fluid flow rate in a pipe is measured by the flow
meters. There are a variety of flow meters for measuring the flow rate of liquids,
such as ultrasonic flow meters, magnetic flow meters, variable area flow
meters, turbine flow meters etc. Among these, the turbine flow meter is
discussed herein.
In a volumetric measuring turbine type flow meter, as
shown in Figure below, fluid entering the meter flows through a strainer first,
where the turbulence of flow is reduced and the velocity profile is improved.

Then fluid passes through the turbine vanes, causing it
to rotate at an angular velocity proportional to the flow rate. As the vane
rotates through the magnetic field, created at the base of the pick-up
transducer, an AC sign wave-type pulse is generated in the pick-up coil. These
impulses produce an output frequency. The summation of the pulsing frequency
signal is directly proportional to the volumetric flow through the meter. A
flow transmitter in the meter processes the pulse signal to determine the flow
rate of the fluid. Thus, the frequency of the signal, directly related to flow
rate, is used in measuring the flow rate which is registered and shown in the
electronic monitor attached to the meter.
How to install a flow meter?
Installation of Flow Meter
While installing a flow meter, the following
instructions should be carried out for proper functioning and maintenance of
the meter.
1. Install meter horizontally, keeping the magnetic
pick-up facing upward.
2. If suspended matters are present in water, a mesh
strainer should be installed upstream.
3. Install bypass line to allow meter inspection and
repair without interrupting the flow, as shown in Figure below.
Water flow meter installations.
4. Install straight pipe of minimum length equal to 10
pipe diameters, on the upstream side, and 5 diameters on the downstream side, of
the flow meter.
5. Install the flow meter and connection cable far away
from electric motors, transformers, sparking devices, high voltage lines, etc.
Put cables in conduit close to those electrical items.
