HOW TO CALCULATE TILES QUANTITY FOR A FLOOR AND WALL?

HOW TO CALCULATE TILES NEEDED FOR A FLOOR AND WALL?

In this article, we will explain how to calculate the quantity of tiles needed for your floor or wall construction.

Note: This Calculation Will Be In Square Meters Or Meters

Example: Consider this plan as a Given data

HOW TO CALCULATE TILES QUANTITY

In figure we have floor size of 12m x 12m

We want To determine the number of tiles required for the given floor area

Number of Tiles required = (Total Area to be laid / Area of one tile) × Wastage

STEP 1: Find Total Area To Be Laid

Total area = Total Room Floor Area + Skirting Tiles area

Total Room Floor Area = Length of the room × Breadth of the room

Length of the room = 12m – (2 x thickness of outer wall) = 11.4m

Breadth of the room = 12m – (2 x thickness of inner wall) = 11.4m

Total Room Floor Area = 11.4m x 11.4m = 144m2

Deductions

Column = 0.9 x 0.9 = 0.81m2

Wall area = (4+2+2.8+0.8) x thickness of inner wall = 9.6 x 0.15 = 1.44m2

Total deductions = 0.81m2 + 1.44m2 = 2.25m2

Total Room Floor Area = 144 + door side area – deductions = 144 + (1.5x0.3) – 2.25 = 142.2 m2

HOW TO CALCULATE TILES QUANTITY

Skirting Tiles area: To know the skirting tiles needed we need to calculate the perimeter of the floor

From the above image plan, we can find the perimeter as

0.3 wall = 11.4 + 11.4 + 11.4 + 11.4 – (door opening 1.5) = 44.1Rm

0.15 wall = (outer side + inner side) = (2.8+0.8+2+4) + (2.65+0.65+1.85+3.85) = 18.6Rm

Column = (length x 4 sides) = 0.9 x 4 = 3.6Rm

Total perimeter of the floor = (44.1+18.6+3.6) = 66.3Rm

We will take 0.1016 m (4 inches) as skirting tiles height

Skirting Tiles area= The perimeter of the room × Skirting Tile height

Skirting Tiles area= 66.3 x 0.1016 = 6.73 m2

Total area = Total Room Floor Area + Skirting Tiles area

Total area = 142.2 m2 + 6.73 m2 = 148.93 m2

STEP 2: Find Area Of Tile

Calculate the area of a tile that we plan to place on the floor, where we will take 0.6 m × 0.6 m or 600 mm × 600 mm as tile size,

Area of one tile = 0.6 m × 0.6 m

Area of one tile = 0.36 m2 (approx)

STEP 3: Number Of Tiles Required

Number of Tiles required = (Total Area to be laid / Area of one tile) × Wastage*

Number of Tiles required = (148.93/0.36) + 2% = 413.69 + 8.27 = 421.96 – 425 tiles

Number of Tiles required = 425 tiles

*Wastage – Rendered wastage & damaged tiles
