WHAT IS POINTING?
Brick or stone masonry mortar joints are covered with a suitable cement or lime mortar, in order to protect the joints from weathering and also to improve the appearance of the building structure.
Pointing are joints are properly filled with mortar of brick or stone masonry.

USES OF POINTING
1. Took caring for structures joints
2. Pointing being cheap can be adopted in places of low rainfall
3. It gives aesthetic view to viz., stone blocks, bricks etc, as its desired to be
4. Used to resist the weather conditions of bricks and stones masonry
POINTS TO REMEMBER
1. The entire depth of the mortar joints must be between 12 and 20 mm
2. the loose mortar on the wall should be removed with brushes or a sponge
3. The joints and the surface wall are sprayed with water to stay wet for a few hours.
4. The joints, prepared are filled with suitable mortar with a small trowel.
1:5 to 1:6 ratio according to the fineness of sand
5. All excess mortar sticking to the sides is scraped away.
6. Wall should be kept wet for 7 to 10 days after pointing work done cement mortar
Note: In some sites will start plastering work after 48 hours of pointing work done
TYPES OF POINTING
VEE POINTING
V-joint provides no form of physical force to move water due to its cut
FLUSH POINTING
Flush joints are used in the construction of brick walls, they are used for plastering and final finishing. This cut joint provides water resistance against the wall
SUNK POINTING
This is a cut joint used due to its high resistance to rainwater penetration by its curve
RAISED POINTING
The excess mortar in the joint will easily come out and form a mortar rise between the bricks. Raised seals are used for degradation when subjected to different weather conditions.
