Merits And Demerits Of Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (AAC Blocks)
What
is AAC blocks?
Autoclaved
aerated concrete blocks (AAC) was made in
Sweden in 1924. It has become one of the most widely used construction
materials in European countries and is growth all over the world. The AAC is produced
by materials such as limestone, sand, cement, and water and a small amount of
ascending agent.
Advantage of
Autoclaved Aerated Concrete
1.
According to the
verified source, Autoclaved Aerated Concrete blocks is very favourable because
of
a) High
strength / weight ratio,
b) Excellent
tensile strength,
c) Low
coefficient of thermal expansion
d) Its
excellent thermal acoustic insulation properties due to the vacuum of air in
the concrete.
2.
AAC block can
reduce a dead load of construction materials, it will simultaneously reduce
the reinforcement due to the lightness of the blocks.
3.
This block is
produced by Fly ash it can avoid the inevitable waste - fly ash. By using fly
ash, AAC blocks help to create a sustainable environment by reducing CO2
emissions, erosion of agricultural soils and water pollution.
4.
It is lighter than
ordinary clay bricks so its simple to transport and economical.
5.
AAC’s lightweight
saves on labour costs.
6.
AAC blocks are bigger
in size than clay bricks, it means fewer joints in AAC wall construction.
7.
Production energy
of AAC is low compared to the production of other construction products.
Smaller air blanks and thermal mass of these blocks provide thermal insulation,
thus reducing the cost of artificially maintaining a building's temperature.

Disadvantage of
Autoclaved Aerated Concrete
1.
AAC block work on
monsoon season which can create cracks. It can be avoided by reducing motor
strength it can be avoided and making sure the dry blocks used on installation
2.
Because AAC blocks
are easily breakable, they should be treated carefully with bricks to avoid
breaking
3. The
brittleness of the block requires long, thin screws when fitting cupboard, frames
and wood-mounted drill bits or hammers.
