WHAT IS SPD AND WHY WE SHOULD WANT TO USE IT IN DB?

SPD - Surge Protection Devices

A surge protector attempts to limit the high voltage supplied to an electric device by either blocking or shorting to ground any unwanted voltages above a safe threshold

This is the most commonly used and most efficient type of overvoltage protection.

.
The Three Types Of SPD

Type 1 SPD

Type 1 SPD is recommended in the specific case of service and industrial buildings, which are protected by a lightning protection system or mesh cage.

It protects electrical installations against direct lightning bolts. It can emit light from the earth's conductor to the network conductors.

Used in building with overhead (DT) supply or roof-mounted a lightning protection system

Its current wave is 10/350 .s

Type 2 SPD

Type 2 SPD is the main security system for all low voltage power installations. Each electrical switchboard is installed, which prevents the spread of high voltages in electrical installations and protects the load.

Suitable for all other installations after Type 1 SPD at income or sub-supply level.

A modern home with underground cable supply will typically use a Type 2 unit

Its current wave is 8/20 .s

Type 3 SPD

These SPDs have a low discharge capacity. They must, therefore, be installed close to the supporting and critical loads for the Type 2 SPD.

After Type 2 is used for localized high voltage protection in control boxes or insensitive or valuable electronic devices. Eg A surge protective extension leads to a large plasma TV, an example of a Type 3 device

A combination of voltage waves (1.2 / 50 μs) and current waves (8/20) s)

CAUSES OF SPD FAILURE INCLUDE:

1.   Installation errors
2.   Misapplication of a product for its voltage rating
3.   Sustained over-voltage events

The following is where high risk and SPDs must be fitted:

The risk to human life - places where people are receiving medical treatment, safety equipment used, properties with overhead TT systems

Public Services - museums, IT centres, libraries

Commercial and industrial - factories, offices, shops

Areas where SPDs should be considered and further risk assessment required:

Large residential - flats

Domestic - depending on location, cabling system etc

Basically, SPD is used to minimize high voltage (by lighting) to safeguard electrical devices
